Japan’s new Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has made foreign resident policy one of her key priorities.
Norimi Onoda, the new Minister for Economic Security, will also oversee the promotion of a cohesive society with foreign residents.
At her first press conference, Minister Onoda stated that the government will take strict action against rule violations while reviewing outdated systems that have not adapted to Japan’s growing foreign population.
According to the Immigration Services Agency, the number of foreign residents reached 3.76 million by the end of 2024, an increase of nearly 80% over the past decade.
The government says it will continue to welcome foreigners who contribute to Japan’s industrial innovation. It also plans to strengthen measures against unlawful employment and the misuse of social systems.
As Japan continues to face labor shortages, the new administration’s challenge is to find a balance between control and inclusion. The goal is to build a society that is secure yet open to global talent.
